Boyd strikes it rich at poker tournament
Russ "Dutch" Boyd, a University of Missouri law school graduate, won the World Series of Poker No Limit Hold ’Em Short Handed tournament yesterday in Las Vegas, earning $475,000 and his first WSOP bracelet.

At the final table, Boyd went head-to-head with Joseph Hachem. Before the decisive hand, Boyd was the chip leader with $1,460,000, while Hachem had $600,000.

In No Limit Hold ’Em, each player is dealt two cards and they bet before three community cards, known as the Flop, are turned over. Then there’s more betting before another card, known as the Turn, and the final card, called the River, are revealed. When the last community card is turned, the best poker hand among those still in the game wins.

Boyd drew an Ace and 5 and bet all his chips. Hachem, who drew an Ace-Queen, stayed in the hand. The next four cards flipped were an Ace, King, 9 and Jack, which meant Hachem still had the advantage. But the River revealed a 5, giving Boyd two pair and the victory.

Boyd is the son of Columbia’s Eva Seibert. He graduated from Central Missouri State at age 14 and moved to Columbia with Seibert and his brother Bobby so he could attend law school at MU. He graduated from law school at age 18 in 1999 and became a star in the poker world when he finished 12th at the 2003 World Series of Poker.
